Learning Empathy and Understanding Through “Spoon Theory”

Millions of Americans live with disabilities, yet many non-disabled people cannot understand or relate to their challenges. In a 2003 essay, Christine Miserandino coined the term “Spoon Theory” to describe her experience living with the autoimmune disease lupus, and the way it drains her physical energy. Since then, Spoon Theory has been embraced by the #disabled community, and the term “Spoonies” has become a popular social media hashtag.
